Details On The Tragic Drowning Incident Of Two Brazilian Influencers

After partying on a yacht near São Paulo on Sept. 29, the two influencers Aline Tamara Moreira de Amorim and Beatriz Tavares da Silva Faria, joined four others on a speedboat to shore. Reports say they refused lifejackets, fearing they would ruin their tans and photos, and drowned when rough waters capsized the crowded boat.

Per PEOPLE, the accident took place in an area known as Garganta do Diabo, (Devil’s Throat). The group was returning to shore on a small boat when a wave struck, throwing all seven passengers into the water.  The New York Post states that the speedboat captain told police he was ordered to carry six passengers, though the boat had a five-person limit. The overloaded vessel struggled to navigate the rough waves, which eventually flooded the boat and sent the passengers overboard. The pilot, who remains unidentified, told police he attempted to rescue everyone who fell overboard but was only able to retrieve some survivors.
